School Context

Dixons Creek is a small, family friendly rural school that was opened on June 12, 1875 and is located in the heart of the beautiful Yarra Valley, 70kms NE of Melbourne. The school is surrounded by farms and vineyards in a rapidly growing tourist area.  The buildings consist of the original schoolhouse where the general office, staffroom, garden kitchen and principal office are located. The Year Foundation – 2 classes are taught in a double LTC classroom as are the Year 3/4 class and the Year 5/6 class. Both units are located in the beautiful pine forest area of the school. The Year F-2 class is housed in a large double unit built under the ‘Building the Education Revolution’ program. These classrooms have a kitchen, disabled toilet and withdrawal area. The class has access to a large outdoor learning deck. All classrooms have computer networks and interactive whiteboards. There is a library/learning intervention double room and an art room. A large sport and storage building was completed in 2008.

The grounds are well tended with two play equipment areas, large slide, basketball/netball court, small oval with AFL goal posts, pine forest and shelter shed. The oval and court have synthetic grassed surfaces that provide soft year round clean play areas.  Rose gardens and native plant areas have been established. The pine forest is a magical place for children to let their imaginations roam free!

At the February Census 2017 there were 70 children enrolled.

We have a very good mix of experienced, accomplished and graduate teachers on staff. Specialist teachers teach Art, Indonesian, Physical Education and Tennis. The school has a full time office manager and a part time financial controller.  Three Literacy/Numeracy Intervention programs are facilitated by an experienced teacher, teacher assistant or tutor each week.  The curriculum is Victorian Curriculum based and enhanced with a four year Integrated Inquiry Curriculum plan.

The school gained Performance and Development Culture accreditation in 2008. We registered as a 'Kids Matter' school in 2015.

The school culture is strongly supported by a positive values program that encourages children to be respectful of all people.  Children are highly motivated to achieve well and this is demonstrated in the excellent student learning results at all levels. The staff opinion survey demonstrates the cohesiveness and well being of this dedicated group of professionals.  The parent community is highly supportive of the school programs with many parents assisting in the classrooms throughout the Literacy and Numeracy blocks. Our School Council and PFA are amazing groups of people with boundless energy and enthusiasm.
